Last week, Rainier Valley Leadership Academy (RVLA) and Deacon, in collaboration with ABC Western Washington and Platinum Group, hosted a pre-launch event for their brand new after-school program, “Introduction to Construction.” This exciting initiative, which kicked off on February 6^th, will run twice a week until the end of the school year. This program not only aims to spark interest and equip students with valuable skills needed in the rewarding field of construction, but also to promote equity in the construction industry by providing mentorship opportunities for BIPOC and other historically marginalized students.

The event was a dynamic showcase of various trades within the multifaceted construction industry. Students were captivated by presentations from a diverse range of professionals, each providing insightful career advice while showcasing their specific skill sets. A notable highlight was the interactive demonstration wall, which allowed tradespeople to come together to collaboratively construct a mini masterpiece, showcasing their talents and the spirit of teamwork, which is essential in this industry.

To solidify the interactive, collaborative nature of construction, students participated in a challenging yet engaging introduction activity: assembling birdhouse kits. This hands-on experience provided a taste of the practical skills students will develop throughout the program, while also showcasing the skills and creativity they already possess.
